Landscape Series (16x9)

These pieces are based on the 16x9 proportion in landscape format. With this proportion the relationship between the length and height is not one half, so, in my construction of the geometry, I have added a single unit height rectangle at the bottom of each composition in an appropriate colour. This provides the ability to use vertical symmetry.

The works are available and can be purchased. They are printed on archival paper; the prints are signed and numbered and include a QR code that links back to the unique page here so that observers of the print can read the text that accompanies the image.

The colour of this block of is carefully chosen and effectively underlines the construction.

Tree Tangle

The camera penetrates the tangle of branches before the leaves get their chance. The willow and the dogwood; common in the parks blends the subdued colours of the season’s boundary. The buds and new shoots are just appearing in amongst the random weavings of the branches and with a wide aperture we can blur the palette.

Sky Trees Reflex

Look up to the trees bare in the Winter sky. Look down in the cold waters we see the branches rippled in the surface, reflecting colours of the sky - mixed in with the watercolour. I balance and then unbalance the 2 sides of this rectangle; my arc joins and leaps across the shapes; the curve contains the branches that silhouette against the clouds in the sky cerulean.

Beach Stones on the Street

Merton street sett stones caught my eye. I wonder if these came from Chessel Beach. I wondered about this before but now I am collecting the images for my collages using in the geometry - this time rotated sectors of a circle.

Wood Rings

January 30, 2023

In the forest some trees are harvested, piled safely and revealing their aged rings. We count the rings to estimate their age and notice that some rings are wide and others narrow. Nearby, a sapling oak is only just learning how to drop last year’s brown and brittle leaves curled by the recent frosts.

Wild River Sweep

The winter river is in full flood and the weirs are controlling the torrents as the turbulent waters scour out the sediments. The river is wild and dangerous with fast currents and a surface that mixes the whites of the foam with the greens and greys of the cold winter Thames.

A walk through the village where sun is planted in the gardens, to meadows of ragwort and bitter dock. Sky colours the backdrop to the yellows, ochres and dusky browns. Petals repeat out from orange buttons.

Sweeping from sky to land, the hill of meadow flowers meets the blue of sky. Up the walk with rest for breath and closer look, down the view meets the green of trees.
