Portrait Format Series

In this series the portrait format pieces are using the golden ratio. Sometimes the ratio between the long and the short side is (1+√5)/2. Some pieces are 2 landscape shaped rectangles combined.

These pieces are made of 2 rectangular panels bolted together.

Umbrella tropics

With the warm air dense with moisture we enjoy the tropical exotic plants in their natural habitat. Water drops form on the rubbery leaves and the rain seems to envelope the surroundings in a misty veil of fog over the scene.

Christmas Colours

In the garden as Christmas approaches we see the reds and greens in the Winter light. Leaves have fallen from the trees but the Oregon Grape plants that keep their leaves show the colours of Christmas.

Year’s End Colours

In our winter garden reds and greens combine to signal the end of the year. Pushing through the shaded borders are leaves; some delicate as paper but others spiked and rubbery, complementing each other through shape and colour.

Aster River

October 18, 2023

Along the bank of the river the aster flowers are silhouetted against the rippling flow. There is just a hint of the blueness of the sky reflected in the water although the trees from the far bank provide a contrasting darkness. The riverbank is now hosting these purple daisy-like flowers that are not native to these parts, never-the-less the colours help in the structure of this piece that is formed of arcs and divisions.

Sky Mix Tree

Against the cloudless sky the sun catches the branches of the leafless tree. The warmth of the colours in the bark contrasts with the cerulean shades. Curved forms hold the textures and hues dividing the rectangle into two parts.

Ground Leaves

December 28, 2022

Oaks overhang the paths; their leaves have scattered over the ground mixing a rusty colour palette. Shapes in the rectangle are painted with enhanced tones picked from the grounded hues.

Lean over Water

December 22, 2022

Lean over the stream to see trees leaning over. Leafless winter reveals triangles formed by the branches. Colours are reflected in the flowing waters that sweep through the shadows.

Sky Tree

December 19, 2022

The leaves are gone and the sun is falling. The trees stretch up into the blue, their branches catching the last rays of the day. Orange and blue are the colours framed in the shapes set by the divided rectangle.
