Root 2 A size

In this series the ‘A’ size is used but in a portrait or landscape format. The long side of the rectangle is formed by taking an arc with radius of the diagonal of the square; where this meets the the extended line side of the square.

The ratio of the sides of this rectangle is √2 or 1.4142. This rectangle forms the basis of the ‘A’ size, a European standard paper size with A0 being the largest.

Blue Water Lily

In Sri Lanka, we observe the Blue Water Lilies gracefully adorning the shallow waters. Their petals mirror the cerulean hues of the sky, while delicate light yellow stamens form their centres.The background to the flowers is the dark lake that adjoins the rice paddy.

Fritillaria Orange

Lipstick Palm

In the dense lush undergrowth of Sri Lanka we spot a contrasting red colour pushing up behind the palm fronds. The leaves, with their graceful curves, and the vertical ascent of the vertical red creates a compelling contrast of geometries.

Maple Grass in the Autumn Garden

Before the great leaf pickup begins in our garden, the grounded maple leaves form a spectacle of colours; oranges, yellows and browns contrasting against the viridian greens of the cropped grass. As the equinox winds finally eject the reluctant leaves from the branches, grass will be hidden so we must rake them away for recycling. The sweeps and bands in the rectangles proportioned with √ 2 are filled with the colours found by the camera that points to the ground.

Rose Mallow

Peach coloured lobes and carmine red stigma of the hibiscus flowers reach out towards the Greek island sun. We focus on the forms of this cultivated mallow and pick out the colours to complete this rectangle with arcs and sweeps.

Wheat Waiting

August 21, 2023

The wheat in the field is mature and ready for harvest. The colours of the stalks and ears smell of the bread that will soon be baked from the threshed grains. The camera finds the drooping buff coloured stems above the ochre interior; home to the unseen field mice.

August Rain, Vivid Colour

The August rain has painted the garden with glossy colour. The fiery oranges and reds contrast with the blades of green that shun the water. The Crocosmia plants that are native to Africa deserve a closer look and the camera penetrates the stems and capsules to find forking curves and droplets of water.

Veronica (Vera Eikon)

A walk in the park and we are drawn to the purple flowers in the border. The insects view of these spikes is of brilliant pods of orange against the dark violet-blue wands; the camera grabs the colours and are used in the arcs defining the geometry of the rectangle.

Grass Ground

Blades of grass form random pencil line texture scribbled in greens. In the field beyond, the grasses show less green but more ochres and yellows. Curved shapes and angular forms are filled with the summer colours picked from the day’s images.

Wisteria Wisdom

We waited for the wisteria to come into flower and we were not disappointed. Up close, the violets and purples blend with light lavender tones; these colours are used to flood the geometric shapes. A block of yellow green seperates the segment and arc from the long racemes formed on the green stalks.

Crops and Grasses

Under the cerelean sky the wind brushes the barley planted in one field as waves of randomness shimmers over the wild grasses in the next. Arcs of green and yellow with their shared centres are mixed in with the images of dense undergrowth. The distant horizon generates a line that defines the geometric conjunction.

Cloud Flag

In the midst of predominantly grey hues, our eyes perceive skies tinged with a captivating shade of brown. This contrasting color evokes a longing for vibrant blue skies, which have the power to invigorate our minds and inspire optimism and hope. Amidst deliberately arranged arcs, segments, and bands, we arrange the random dance of clouds, juxtaposed against the textured expanses of serene cerulean and warm ochre tones.

Garden Releaved

We are relieved to see most of our garden plants coming back into leaf after a cold and (sometimes) frosty Winter. The light seems to penetrate the transparency of the leaves; reds and oranges mix with the greens with hints of the mauvish bluebells in the background. Back in the studio the colours blend within the sweep of the arcs that divide the rectangle.
